I’ll take 20 please! On a serious note, nobody likes household chores so it’s easy to see why Elon Musk and his nonprofit company OpenAI are working to create this robot. Creating this robot is apart of OpenAI’s technical goals which they released in a blog post yesterday. It reads as follows:
We’re working to enable a physical robot (off-the-shelf; not manufactured by OpenAI) to perform basic housework. There are existing techniques for specific tasks, but we believe that learning algorithms can eventually be made reliable enough to create a general-purpose robot. More generally, robotics is a good testbed for many challenges in AI.
At first glance it appears that the household robot is the most interesting part of OpenAI’s technical goals, but something else caught my eye.
We plan to build an agent that can perform a complex task specified by language, and ask for clarification about the task if it’s ambiguous. Today, there are promising algorithms for supervised language tasks such as question answering, syntactic parsing and machinetranslation but there aren’t any for more advanced linguistic goals, such as the ability to carry a conversation, the ability to fully understand a document, and the ability to follow complex instructions in natural language. We expect to develop new learning algorithms and paradigms to tackle these problems.
A robot that could clean and do chores sounds cool and all, but this seems a 1000x times better! Imagine a robot with the ability to follow complex instructions! We would be able to delegate extremely difficult tasks down to robots who could comprehend and complete the tasks with ease! With these new learning algorithms, these robots may be able to think outside of the box to solve some of the many problems plaguing mankind today.
The fact that this company is a nonprofit also excites me because it won’t be worrying about making a profit and will focus more on innovation. It sounds as if OpenAI is working more on the artificial intelligence rather than the design of the actual robots but i’m excited to see what they come up with regardless. This is similar to what Elon Musk did with the HyperLoop as there are now companies such as HyperLoop One working on actually building the machines based upon Elon Musk’s ideas. We don’t know exactly how much Elon Musk is working on/with this project but i’m sure with his backing we will see something great come out of this.
It is interesting to note that Elon Musk has been wary about artificial intelligence in the past. He once claimed that artificial intelligence could spawn a robot army similar to that of Terminator. Elon has made multiple investments into artificial intelligence companies in order to “keep a watch” over the technologies to prevent it from getting out of hand. With that being said, it will be interesting to see what kind of preventive measures Elon and OpenAI will take to prevent their AI from getting out of hand.
What do you think about Elon Musk’s and OpenAI’s plan to build a robot capable of doing household chores and seemingly so much more? Let me know in the comments!
